The McConnell Group,, a health science company, has an opening for a full-time Chief Veterinarian to provide support at Plum Island Animal Disease Center. PIADC is located just off the northeastern tip of New York's Long Island. This position supports the Department of Homeland Security Research and Development Program vaccine studies by caring for large animals in accordance with established procedures.

Candidates are not eligible if they own or work with cloven-hoofed animals, pigs, and chickens outside of PIADC due to biosecurity requirements.  The only type of livestock that can be privately owned or worked with is horses.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert programmatic, clinical, training, and supervisory animal care and welfare services in a BSL3-Ag biocontainment facility
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to advise PIADC Directors along with research and diagnostic scientists on animal care and welfare matters
  • Responsible for the care and welfare of research animals
  • Prescribe and administer appropriate medical treatment and drugs
  • Monitor animal husbandry for the feeding and care of research animals
  • Oversee and ensure safe operations of the vivarium for animal welfare and Select Agent Management
  • Lead a robust team of animal care technicians, animal health technicians, and veterinarians
  • Assure compliance with all Federal, State, and local animal welfare and Select Agent regulations in a BSL3-Ag containment facility
  • Perform other duties as assigned


  • Possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree accredited by the AVMA
  • Licensed to practice in one state within the United States
  • Minimum 5 years of clinical experience to include large animal species
  • Board certification and lab animal medicine preferred
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  1. Must be able to receive and maintain a Personal Security Level 3 (PSL-3) clearance and participate in the Occupational Health/Safety Programs

Candidate MUST pass a government background investigation (NAC), employment physical, and drug/alcohol screening.
